In this workshop we will explore the decorative & design potential of manipulating the ligatures and loops of cursive italic.
The session will begin with a recap of cursive italic, then we will move onto a series of writing exercises, starting with the pencil, moving on to pointed pen and finishing with the edged pen to look at how expanding the ligatures can add a different texture and rhythm to your work

This workshop will consider ways to use paper folding only, to construct interesting and highly usable structures for carrying calligraphy that turn and flex showing different vistas at each turn. We’ll take easy steps to ensure the structures work, making mock-ups to place wording where you want it, and then we’ll finish up with a clever little flip flop card which opens repeatedly and ….. neverendingly!
Saturday 22nd February 2025

A calligram is a set of words arranged in such a way that it forms a thematically related image. It can be a poem, a phrase, a portion of scripture, or a single word. We will look at lots of different examples and try out different ideas before choosing one to work on.
It could be a name or a single word or a short poem.
Saturday 22nd March 2025
10am - 4pm
Introducing this classic Uncial Hand based on the style of The St. Cuthbert (Stonyhurst) Gospel c.AD.698.
It is a crisp, clear hand and as in its origins, has no additional capitals set. We will begin with learning and practicing an alphabet with an option to complete a small quotation or an 'earthy alphabet' to really feel the flow and rhythm of this hand that can be useful and relevant for modern calligraphy.
Saturday 12th April 2025
10am -12 pm
Saturday 14th June 2025
10am - 4 pm
We will create cut-lettering for collage as well as using scraps and pieces from previous work to build up interesting images. We will look at using a range of calligraphy tools to build up a varying selection of letters and text that will be incorporated in our designs. In addition we will add colour and marks to enhance these designs. If time allows we may be able to create text using gel-plates.
It would be a good idea to save ‘reject’ work as this can be used for our collages. Also collect a range of papers from brown wrapping paper and tissue paper to old envelopes etc. If you have any pre-decorated papers (i.e. paste papers or trials of marks) these would also be useful.
